Gifting Smart, Gifting Well

National Adult Day Services Week is this week, September 17th-23rd. As we get closer to the opening of Williamsburg Landing Adult Day Center in early 2018, our Senior Director of Development, Sally Wolfe, has created a guide on how to give well.

Like so many things in life, there is an art to philanthropy. “But”, you say, “I’m not a philanthropist!” I bet you are! I bet there are many causes you support. Have you made a gift to your church or your college? Maybe you’ve donated to the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army? If so, you are a philanthropist!

So if you are going to be a philanthropist, keep in mind that there are a lot of ways to make your gift. The one everyone thinks of is writing a check. This is certainly the easiest method, but I know I like to keep my cash in case I need it.

A good alternative might be to donate stock. Perhaps you have shares you’ve owned for years. If so, because of capital gains selling the shares may prove expensive. You can make your gift by giving those appreciated stocks.

A little-known alternative is utilizing your retirement account. Many residents at Williamsburg Landing have a Required Minimum Distribution which may be used (within certain parameters!) to make a donation.

Our residents at Williamsburg Landing have an opportunity others do not. Residents can sign up for a 90 percent or 50 percent Entrance Fee refund plan when entering Williamsburg Landing. They can then assign all or part of the refund -- and it counts as a gift and tax-deduction.

Another option is to remember Williamsburg Landing with a gift in your will. It can be a percentage of your estate or a specific dollar amount.

If you would like to support our campaign for Adult Day, any of these methods may be used. We would welcome a gift to support the establishment of the program, to bring the best in activities and programs to the center, or to provide scholarships. For instance, your gift of $2,500 would provide one participant a half-day scholarship for a full year.
