National Nutrition Month

It’s March. March means New Year’s resolutions are fizzling out, and our goals to change our eating habits to healthier choices may have taken a turn for the worse. Choosing healthy foods is difficult at all ages, but maintaining good nutrition as an older adult can be even more challenging. Transportation options can be limited, healthier food tends to be higher priced, and many older adults no longer cook for themselves. Combined with regular exercise, maintaining proper nutrition will help you live longer, be more mentally sharp, and feel better all around.

The Stephen H. Montgomery Employee Training and Education Fund

In 2008, resident Hank Kremer and his wife Joyce generously funded the Nurse Education fund at Williamsburg Landing. The fund was to provide training for Woodhaven nurses to encourage compassionate care. It was such a success, that some years later the Board of Williamsburg Landing determined that it would be beneficial for these training opportunities to be available to all employees, not just nurses. The Employee Training and Education Fund was created in the spring of 2016, as Steve Montgomery was approaching retirement.

Ready Body, Learning Minds Project

Williamsburg Landing resident Bud Walker has been a skilled woodworker since his teenage years. He has crafted a variety of items such as toy boxes for his grandchildren, art easels, lamps, and even a dollhouse that is an exact replica of his granddaughter’s current home. His most recent project in Williamsburg Landing’s woodshop was in partnership with the Williamsburg James City County (JCC) School system and WJCC Physical Therapist, Susan Larkin.

Williamsburg Landing's Outstanding Service to Seniors Award- Nomination Deadline March 20, 2017

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. In April 1963, President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens designated May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.”
